High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Signs of high potential?

High potential and gifted children are advanced learners.

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
  • In our classrooms, learning is designed to meet each child where they are and help them grow. Teachers provide differentiated learning experiences that adjust pace, challenge and complexity, so students are supported and extended appropriately. Through clear teaching of thinking and problem-solving skills, along with engaging and meaningful learning tasks, students are encouraged to be curious, creative and confident learners.
  • Students regularly work in flexible groups, giving them opportunities to collaborate, share ideas and learn from one another. Teachers use ongoing assessment to understand each child’s progress and provide strengths-based feedback and clear learning goals. Our classrooms are safe and supportive environments where students are encouraged to take risks, reflect on their learning and develop perseverance.
  • We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students so every child can thrive at our school. Students are offered opportunities for leadership, choice and challenge across learning areas, including movement and skill development in PDHPE. By valuing individual strengths and learning profiles, we help students build confidence, independence and a love of learning.
Across our school

Across our school, high potential and gifted education opportunities are embedded within rich, engaging learning experiences that allow every child to develop their skills, interests and talents. Our Creative and Performing Arts programs are carefully designed to meet curriculum outcomes while being tailored to each student’s stage of development. Weekly music lessons, opportunities to create, rehearse and perform, and whole-school productions foster confidence, joy and a strong sense of achievement. Students are also encouraged to appreciate and create visual art inspired by our environment and surroundings.

  • Hands-on, real-world learning is further supported through our school garden and kitchen programs. These experiences allow students to develop practical skills while applying knowledge in meaningful ways, such as growing, preparing and sharing food. For students with high potential in this area, these programs provide opportunities to extend thinking, take on responsibility and deepen understanding through authentic learning.
  • STEM learning is a strong focus across the school and is enhanced through partnerships with department-approved external organisations. Programs such as Engineers Without Borders provide students with opportunities to work alongside experts to explore real-world challenges. Students design, construct and test solutions linked to concepts such as appropriate housing, renewable wind energy, safe structures and prosthetic design. These experiences allow students, particularly those with high potential in STEM, to work beyond age-expected outcomes and develop advanced problem-solving and design thinking skills.
  • Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning informed by current research and best practice. Students access a range of enrichment and extension opportunities, including leadership roles, mentoring, cultural activities, excursions, wellbeing programs and interest-based groups, supporting them to develop confidence, explore their strengths and thrive as learners.
Across NSW
  • Schools Spectacular – PULSE Broken Hill Program
This annual combined-schools performance initiative, delivered with the support of the NSW Department of Education Arts Unit, provides students in remote Far West NSW with the opportunity to perform in a world-class production. Students develop advanced skills in music, dance and drama through authentic rehearsal and performance experiences, supporting those demonstrating high potential in the creative and performing arts while building confidence, collaboration and a strong sense of belonging.
  • Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC)
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a NSW Government initiative that promotes a love of reading and engagement with texts for meaning, fluency, enjoyment and enrichment. The PRC supports High Potential and Gifted Education by enabling students to extend their reading stamina, complexity and critical thinking. Students demonstrating high potential in literacy are encouraged to read widely and engage with increasingly challenging texts, fostering advanced comprehension, vocabulary development and intellectual curiosity.
